The Wind River rises in the majestic Wind River Range of northwest Wyoming and flows between the Absaroka Range and the Wind River Mountain Range. Of the 44 miles upstream from the Wind River Reservation, only 22 miles are open to the public. Fifteen miles are on the Shoshone, 1 mile on Bureau of Land Management land, about 6 miles on private property that have fishing access allowed. Driving northwest out of Riverton on State Highway 26-287, you will parallel the Wind River all the way to it's headwaters. USFS lands are approximately 13 miles northwest of Dubois.
