Description

The Smith River is one of the most sought after river permits in the state of Montana. Strict permit restrictions require private boaters to enter a lottery system months in advance to get a launch date and commercial outfitters are few. A tributary to the Missouri River, the Smith River drains the Castle Mountains and Big Belt Mountains. Studded with bubbly beginner level whitewater, the Smith is best known for its gorgeous scenery and amazing blue-ribbon trout fishing opportunity.

Along the banks of the Smith River, rolling meadows interspersed with open pine forest give way to towering limestone cliffs. Wildlife viewing is excellent with frequent sightings of raptors, black bear and deer. The season on the Smith is especially short due to its lower elevation watershed. Trips are commercially offered at 5 days in length and are offered from mid-spring to early summer.
