Description

Killpecker Dunes is the second largest active sand dune field in the world.

The sand dunes off road vehicle area is located in the eastern 1/3 of the greater sand dunes ACEC.  Off road vehicle use is restricted to the active dunes within these 10,500 acres.

The western portion of the ACEC is composed of two Wilderness Study Areas (WSA), the Sand Dunes and Buffalo Hump Wilderness Study Areas, which are closed to the use of motorized vehicles or mechanical transportation.

The Steamboat Mountain area is crucial birthing habitat for deer and elk. This area is closed to motor vehicles from May 1st through June 30th to protect this habitat.
