The Big Horn Mountains are a large part of Sheridan's draw, pristine and forested, but their beautiful backdrop is not the only reason to visit. Far from it. Sheridan is saturated with history. The Sheridan Cemetery is home to a grouping of Civil War era cannons. The Veterans Hospital used to be Fort Mackenzie. The Mill Inn used to be the largest flouring mill in Wyoming. There's a sense of the past interacting closely with the present in Sheridan, and not only in museums. Sheridan does have museums, of course - and King's Western Museum and Sheridan County Museum are worth a visit, to give context to all that history interwoven into the town's atmosphere.
